Confirmation
“In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is ‘sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit’ and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ.” (USCCB)
During the Sacraments of Confirmation, the bishop will anoint the forehead of the Confirmandi with the chrism oil saying the words “Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church 1303, we learn the effects of this important sacrament:
“Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace:
- it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which makes us cry, “Abba! Father!”;
- it unites us more firmly to Christ;
- it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us;
- it renders our bond with the Church more perfect;
- it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross.”
Preparation
- A confirmation sponsor is chosen and must be a practicing Catholic (Baptized, Confirmed, and receives Holy Communion), at least 16 years old, and not the parent of the person to be Confirmed.
- A confirmation saint is also chosen for guidance and emulation of their virtues.
